PDF Documents

Many documents on this site are made available in PDF format. You need Acrobat Reader to view these documents. You can download the Acrobat Reader from the Adobe Web Site.

What is a PDF?

PDF stands for Portable Document Format and was developed by Adobe Corporation. A PDF file provides an easy way to view and print documents on different computers without changing the look of the document.

Web Browsers

Maximum rich text functionality is provided by Internet Explorer 5.5+ (Windows Only) or Mozilla 1.3beta+ (on any platform) or any browser based on the Gecko version in Mozilla 1.3beta. Mozilla Firefox 3.0+ or Internet Explorer 7+ are recommended.

Problems Viewing PDF documents

Missing Text

Some web browsers have trouble displaying PDF documents directly from the web.  If you are attempting to view a document and it is either wholly blank, or contains sections of missing text/formatting, try the following:

  1. Right click on the link to the document.
  2. Select "Save Link As..."
  3. Save the document to your hard drive.
  4. Use either your web browser or the Adobe Reader to open this locally stored copy of the document

Browser Freezes

Internet Explorer sometimes locks up or freezes while attempting to view PDF files.

Try these steps to solve the problem:

  1. Update your browser and Acrobat Reader software to the latest version available. Internet Explorer 7 or better and Acrobat Reader 9 or better are recommended.
  2. Change the settings within the Acrobat Reader software to view the PDF document outside the browser window. After making this configuration change, clicking on a link to a PDF will give you a dialog box asking whether you want to save the file, or view the file. Viewing the file should launch a separate Adobe window with the PDF. Instructions for reconfiguring your browser is at:
